Although nearly everyone agrees that much needs to be done to correct harmful
environmental conditions, the true test of individual or corporate conviction
is what is actually accomplished. In the Summer of 2002, Chad Pregracke,
founder of the Mississippi River Beautification and Restoration Project,
received the Jefferson Award from the American Institute for Public
Service. This award is the US equivalent of the Nobel Prize for Public
Service.
In 1997, Pregracke took on the awesome job of single-handedly removing trash
from the shores and waters of the Mississippi River. In the first year he
cleaned up over 45,000 pounds of trash from 100 miles of shoreline. Since
then, an enthusiastic group of volunteers has joined him. And Honda
Marine has donated one 75-hp, three 90-hp and two 130-hp outboards to power his
houseboat and workboats.
"Honda was one of the first sponsors to step up," said Pregracke. "The
engines are by far the best I have ever run, not just for their mid-range
power, but their durability. We've worked them hard, day after day, and I
won't run any other. It's been a great partnership with Honda."
Pregracke says the Mississippi River cleanup is still one of the prime ongoing
projects. But he and his crew are also committed to the cleanup of a
981-mile stretch of the Ohio River.
Honda has produced 4-stroke outboards for over 37 years. The company's
marine engines, like its automobiles, power equipment and motorcycles, are
renowned for their superior, reliable performance.
